All you need to know about the 2021 iMac

Hey Guys,

Welcome back to my blog.

As you might have heard, the new 2021 iMac was announced at the 'Spring Loaded' Apple event on 20th April 2021. In this blog, I will be telling you everything you need to know about the new iMac. Firstly, the design. The new iMac comes with an all new design that's 11.5 mm thin. This is very good as the last iMac re-design was way back in 2012. Since then the iMac used the same design. In fact, if you looked at the front of the old iMac, It would be identical to the pre-2012 iMacs as the only thing changed in 2012 was the removal of the DVD drive and making the body thinner. The new iMac retains the bezels. But the bezels are white in color. The chin is still there for housing the motherboard, cooling system and the speakers. Coming to the internals. The new iMac comes with the M1 chip. This is the same chip used in the late 2020 MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac Mini. The motherboard is located below the display inside the chin. The chin also contains the six-speaker sound system and the 2 fans which cool the M1. The new iMac comes in 5 colors for the base model and 7 colors for the mid-tier and high end models. All these colors are bright and that explains why Apple choose to make the bezels white in color. The specs is another decision to make before you buy the new 2021 iMac. Below are the specs for all three models:-

Base model:-

CPU- Apple M1 chip with 8-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores.

GPU-7-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine

Mid-Tier Model:-

GPU-8-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine

RAM-8GB unified memory(Max. 16 GB)

Storage- 256GB SSD storage (Max. 2TB)

Ports- Two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports

Two USB 3 ports

Networking- Gigabit Ethernet

Keyboard and mouse- Magic Mouse

Magic Keyboard with Touch ID

High-End Model:-

CPU- Apple M1 chip with 8-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores.

GPU-8-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine

RAM-8GB unified memory(Max. 16 GB)

Storage- 512GB SSD storage (Max. 2TB)

Ports- Two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports

Two USB 3 ports

Networking- Gigabit Ethernet

Keyboard and mouse- Magic Mouse

Magic Keyboard with Touch ID

As you have read, the base model iMac lacks some features such as the extra USB-C Ports and the Gigabit ethernet option. Another thing to note is that the ethernet (LAN) port is located in the power brick and not on the computer itself. The good thing is that you will have a clean desk as you do not have to connect the cable to the iMac itself. However, The Base model does not come with the ethernet port on the power brick. The new iMac comes with a 4.5k Retina Display and the size is 24".

The new iMac is replacing the old 21.5 inch iMacs. The new keyboard and mouse are color matched with the iMac you buy. The keyboard for the Mid-Tier and High-End iMacs come with touch ID. This is made possible by the Secure Enclave feature of the M1 chip. But sadly, the base model does not come with a Touch ID keyboard. Instead it comes with a standard color matched keyboard. Another change to the keyboard is that some of the function keys have new functionality and they are much larger than the previous Magic keyboards. The fact that the new iMac comes with only USB-C and Thunderbolt /USB 4 ports might disappoint some people. Finally, let's look at the price. Below are the prices in INR, US Dollars and UK Pounds:-

Base Model:-

Mid-Tier Model:-

High-End Model:-

So, with all the above, hope you have understood everything about the new 2021 iMac. Also, feel free to comment below telling what you felt about the blog, and does it excite you about the new iMac?

See you in the next blog. Bye!
