Operating systems have had many different kinds and versions. In these different versions, there might be new graphical and design improvements, while in others there might be security improvements. In this blog, I go over whether it is safe to use an older operating system version.
Windows
Microsoft Windows has been the most popular operating system since its release in the early 1980s. In this list, I go over the versions of the Windows operating System Starting From Windows XP to Windows 11.
a) Windows XP And Windows Vista
Windows XP and Windows Vista were known for being revolutionary in terms of usage and graphics. However, After More than 20 years, these operating systems have been left in the dust. Microsoft Officially stopped supporting Windows XP in 2014 and Vista in 2017. But These operating systems have tons of loopholes and security issues in the Modern Era. However, if you are using a computer just to type word documents, see photos and do work offline, these operating systems can be used.
Most of the Applications Do not support Either of these operating systems. It is recommended that an antivirus be installed or upgraded to the OS.
b) Windows 7
After the Failure of Windows Vista due to its poor support for computers, Windows 7 was a hit from day 1. even in 2022, more than 12% of computers still run on Windows 7. This percentage is more than Windows 11, Microsoft's most recent operating system. Windows 7 Official support ended in 2020, however, extended security support is available through payments. Windows 7 can be used for light purposes such as Simple Web Browsing, YouTube, and E-Mail clients. However, make sure that an antivirus is installed as in the recent months, several attacks have taken place targeting Windows 7 Users.
c) Windows 8/8.1
The Two operating systems Windows 8 and 8.1 have known to be one of the most drastic changes to the Windows lineup. Microsoft Discontinued Support for Windows 8 in 2016 but Windows 8.1's support will end on January 10th, 2023. Windows 8/8.1 can be used as a normal operating system with antivirus software installed.
d) Windows 10 and Windows 11
As Windows 10 and Windows 11 are still supported and are the newest updates to the OS lineup, it is safe to say that both of these can be used normally even without an antivirus as the Inbuilt Windows Security defender works well in removing viruses, if any. However, Windows 10 mainstream support will end in 2025. Windows 11's support will go on as it is the latest release.
macOS
Speaking of MacOS, it is recommended that you have installed anything above the 2018 release i.e., macOS Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, and Monterey.
Linux
As Linux is more of a developer-oriented OS, anything above a 2016 release is good for the new features.
