Should you use Firefox as your default browser?

The Internet has allowed people to find information faster than ever before. But to access the Internet, We use a web browser. This is one of the first things a person would install on their computer. Nowadays, Operating systems come pre-installed with a web browser. This usually tends to be Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 and above, and Safari for macOS. However, most people just stick with the default ones or install more popular browsers such as Google Chrome. But, little do people know, Firefox has come a long way since Quantum and is now, according to me, the browser you should be using. Here is why you need to use Firefox:

Firefox saves battery Life:

Web browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Brave and a lot more which are based on Chromium, tend to use the CPU more often than usual. With more CPU and GPU utilization, comes a sacrifice in battery life. Firefox on the other hand is much more efficient and faster as compared to chrome. This means that Firefox is much more kind to your battery. Firefox also has multiprocessing. Now, granted, even chrome has this feature. But the difference is that while Google Chrome opens one process per tab, Firefox allows three tabs per process. This makes a subtle (but significant) difference.

Firefox is more RAM efficient:

Firefox is also very low on RAM usage. Here is a comparison between the latest version of Chrome and Firefox:

RAM Usage for Chrome

1 Tab — 49.2 MB

5 Tabs — 265.3 MB

10 Tabs — 533.2 MB

15 Tabs — 748.3 MB

RAM Usage for Firefox

1 Tab — 116.3 MB

5 Tabs — 376.6 MB

10 Tabs — 437.0 MB

15 Tabs — 518.4 MB

If you notice, Chrome uses less ram when using 1-5 tabs, But when you scale that up to 8 or higher, firefox takes the lead as it compresses the RAM usage. On another note, when many tabs are loaded, it’s impossible to see each one while using Chrome. Mozilla, however, has a nice horizontal scroll that lets you always see what’s on-screen.

Firefox has a lot more Security features

Firefox Privacy & security Dashboard

Mozilla, the company behind Firefox, is a non-profit organization (As of Dec - 2021), Their Browser, Firefox, has a lot more security features. Mozilla released a call-to-arms for users to promote online privacy, stating that “fighting for data privacy — making sure people know who has access to their data, where it goes or could go, and that they have a choice in all of it — is part of Mozilla’s DNA.” A look at the Firefox privacy policy shows what kind of data may be collected, and what that data is used for. Google on the other hand is a data collection company. It already knows too much about you.

The Security dashboard in Firefox also has a lot of options to choose from. These options range from the standard security level to fully blocking a website on your whole network.

Firefox has more customization

Customization in Firefox

Although Chrome has a lot of options for customization, Firefox does not lag behind as it too has a lot of options. The Add-ons store for Firefox has a lot of themes to choose from. This means that you can make your browser look a whole lot different from how it looked before.

Firefox Pocket

Firefox Pocket

Firefox pocket is a neat little handy feature that allows you to save websites you visit frequently or just want to have quick access to. You can just sign in with your Firefox account and click on the pocket button to see your saved sites, pocket also provides you with articles that are trending. This feature can be turned off.

Performance

When you compare Firefox to any chromium based Browser, Firefox is ahead in performance. This can be noticed in lower-end computers running with a low power CPU and with 4 or even 6 Gigabytes of RAM.

Cloud Sync

With the help of your Firefox account, you can sync all of your saved data and access them on a different device. This feature is very similar if not identical to google using Google accounts.

Final Thoughts

If you want to use a fast and powerful web browser for free without any compromises, Firefox is without doubt the one to use. Ever since the release of Firefox Quantum, The Browser has caught up with browsers such as Chrome. According to me (and my personal experience), Firefox is a great browser for performance and security.
